Bahamas to Strengthen Economic Substance Requirements — Orbitax Tax News & Alerts

The Bahamas government has reportedly proposed amendments to strengthen the country's economic substance requirements. The need to strengthen the requirements follows the listing of the Bahamas as non-cooperative by the EU. The Bahamas was listed because it "facilitates offshore structures and arrangements aimed at attracting profits without real economic substance by failing to take all necessary actions to ensure the effective implementation of substance requirements". The proposed amendments include increased compliance requirements and fines of up to BSD 300,000 for failing to comply, as well as the possible removal of a non-complying company from the Business Register.
