According to an announcement by the Japanese Ministry of Finance on 17 December 2014, negotiations for a tax treaty between Japan and Qatar have concluded, with both sides agreeing in principal on the treaty.

Under the tax treaty, withholding taxes would apply as follows:

• Dividends - 5% if the beneficial owner holds at least 10% of the paying company's capital
• Interest - 10%
• Royalties - 5%
