How Columbia Sportswear closed the gap between Pillar Two calculations and electronic filing with Orbitax
Columbia Sportswear Company is a US-based global apparel, footwear, and equipment company headquartered in Portland, Oregon. As the company approached its first Pillar Two filing season, its tax team was comfortable with the technical calculations. The uncertainty began after the numbers were complete.
The company’s initial Pillar Two software supported the calculation process, but it did not provide a way to prepare, validate, and submit the GloBE Information Return. Filing would need to be handled separately, either through a manual process or with support from a local advisor.
With the first FY2024 GIR deadline approaching, Columbia Sportswear needed more than a calculation engine. It needed a practical path from completed calculations to a return that a tax authority would accept.

We were comfortable with the calculations. The difficult part was getting from the numbers to a return the tax authority would actually accept

Calculation Complete, but Not Filing Ready
Columbia Sportswear’s experience highlighted an important distinction in Pillar Two compliance: completing the calculations does not necessarily mean that a company is ready to file.
The GIR requires data to be organized according to a detailed reporting structure, validated against technical requirements, and submitted through the relevant government process. Local registration, tax account access, XML specifications, and jurisdiction-specific filing procedures can all stand between a completed calculation and an accepted return.
The team’s original software stopped before those operational requirements began. As a result, Columbia Sportswear faced a new question: how could it complete the filing without rebuilding the process through spreadsheets, manual forms, and separate local service providers?
The team began looking for a solution that could connect the technical Pillar Two work with the actual filing obligation.
Why Columbia Sportswear Moved to Orbitax
Columbia Sportswear was already working within the Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE ecosystem, which led the team to the Orbitax Global Minimum Tax solution.
The deciding factor was the breadth of the workflow. Orbitax supported the process beyond the calculations, including GIR preparation, data validation, filing management, and direct electronic transmission in jurisdictions where machine-to-machine filing was available.
This gave Columbia Sportswear a way to continue the work inside one platform rather than handing the results from one system into a separate filing process.
“
Orbitax provided the part we were missing. It gave us a clear path from the completed calculations to the actual filing.

”
The move also positioned the team for a broader set of Pillar Two requirements. In addition to the GIR, the Orbitax platform supports GloBE and QDMTT calculations, local returns, notifications, registrations, and other jurisdiction-specific obligations.
For Columbia Sportswear, however, the immediate priority was clear: complete its first GIR filing successfully.
From Onboarding to Acceptance in Approximately Ten Days
Columbia Sportswear used Orbitax to prepare and electronically transmit its FY2024 GIR to the Canada Revenue Agency.
As part of the first-year filing process, the company needed to complete the applicable Canadian registration and government account requirements before the return could be submitted. The team then worked through the GIR preparation, validation, and transmission process in Orbitax.
Because this was the first major Pillar Two filing season, many of the government procedures were new for taxpayers, software providers, and tax authorities alike. There was little precedent to follow, and filing requirements had not yet been tested through multiple annual compliance cycles.
Columbia Sportswear and Orbitax worked through the process methodically, resolving the practical requirements needed to move the return from completed calculations to successful electronic submission.
Approximately ten days after completing its calculations, Columbia Sportswear’s GIR was transmitted electronically and accepted by the Canadian tax authority.
“
Without Orbitax, we would not have completed the filing. It took us from finished calculations to an accepted submission.

Getting Answers Without Leaving the Filing Process
During preparation, the Columbia Sportswear team also used XatBot, the AI copilot built into the Orbitax platform.
XatBot helped the team get answers as questions arose, without requiring users to leave the workflow to search separate documentation or wait for a response through a traditional support process. This was particularly useful during a new filing process in which both technical and operational questions could emerge at different stages.
Rather than acting as a separate research product, XatBot supported the work taking place within the GMT solution. It helped the team navigate the platform, understand requirements, and continue moving through the filing process.
“
The platform was straightforward to use, and XatBot was especially helpful when questions came up during the process.

Establishing a Repeatable Pillar Two Filing Process
The immediate result was Columbia Sportswear’s successful Canadian GIR submission. The longer-term benefit was the establishment of a more complete Pillar Two compliance process.
The company now has a platform that can support the workflow from calculation through filing as its obligations expand. This includes future GIR submissions, QDMTT returns, notifications, and additional local filing requirements.
That continuity is important because Pillar Two compliance does not end once the first GIR has been accepted. Multinational tax teams must manage recurring calculations, evolving local rules, new filing formats, additional jurisdictions, and a growing number of interdependent reporting obligations.
By moving from a calculation-only tool to Orbitax, Columbia Sportswear avoided creating a permanent manual gap between its calculations and its filings.
Results
Columbia Sportswear successfully:
- Transitioned from a fragmented, calculation-only tool to a comprehensive, single-platform solution for end-to-end Pillar Two compliance and electronic filing.
- Navigated the first global filing season by preparing, validating, and transmitting the FY2024 GIR directly through the Orbitax platform.
- Bridged the gap between completed technical calculations and government acceptance in approximately ten days, demonstrating a highly efficient path from data to filing.
- Optimized efficiency by leveraging XatBot to resolve real-time technical and operational queries without leaving the filing workflow.
- Standardized a repeatable, scalable filing process that serves as a permanent foundation for future QDMTT returns, notifications, and additional local reporting obligations.
More Than a Calculation Engine
Columbia Sportswear’s experience demonstrates why Pillar Two technology must address more than the calculation itself.
The numbers may be complete, but a multinational is not compliant until the required return has been prepared, validated, submitted, and accepted. Every manual handoff between those stages introduces additional work, uncertainty, and risk.
Orbitax connected those stages in one workflow, helping Columbia Sportswear move from a completed calculation to its first accepted GIR filing in approximately ten days.
